How to clean and maintain cassette air conditioners?

The cassette air conditioners are ceiling-mounted systems especially suitable for cooling places with suspended ceilings. Used for controlling the temperature of offices, shops, and hotels, these units are comparatively inexpensive and energy-efficient. They operate like other wall-mounted split systems and feature two units. While the indoor unit is responsible for cooling and distributing air through two, three, or four sides, the external unit is set up outside just as the conventional wall-mounted system. Here is how you can ensure proper cleanliness and maintenance of cassette air conditioners for prolonging their life:

Step 1: Make preparations:

  • Before cleaning the cassette AC, cover the valuables. It is not uncommon for the dust and cleaner to drip onto the underlying items and cause damage.
  • Prepare the hand pump spray bottle and coil cleaner. Make sure to follow the dilute ratios and instructions provided by the manufacturer. If the coil cleaner is unavailable at the nearby store, using water and vinegar in a 1:1 ratio will also work.

Step 2: Check the condensate pump:

  • If there is uncertainty about whether the cassette AC has a condensate pump, check it. For this, pop open the head of the AC through the hatch and see where the condensate pipe is going. If it is headed to a pump situated on the top or side of the unit, it means the system uses a condensate pump. However, if the line goes out of the wall, the case is otherwise.
  • In cassette AC systems with a condensate pump, the equipment needs to be cleaned. For this, it is advised to grab a bottle and fill it up to ensure that the water is pumped away.

Step 3: Remove and clean filters:

  • Most cassette air conditioners have tabs on either side to swing open the filter housing. One can access the filter by sliding out the rail system from here. Then, the next step is to get it out and cleaned. For eliminating the dust, the use of a paintbrush is recommended.
  • When satisfied with the dust removal, use the coil cleaner to get rid of the dirt and grime still left on the surface. Next, put the filter against the wall and wash it with water from top to bottom and left to right. Lastly, leave the equipment out for drying.

Step 4: Clean the coil:

  • Cleaning the coil of the cassette AC is a little trickier than with other types of air conditioning units. So, to do this efficiently, it is advised to sit beneath the system and point the tip of the hand pump spray between the fan blades. Shower the coil with the cleaner and go around the fan.

Step 4: Cleaning the casing:

  • Take a damp cloth and wipe the casing of the cassette system. When doing so, pay attention to the corners where the dust gathers.
  • Once the main casing is cleaned, focus on the veins responsible for controlling the direction of airflow.

When satisfied with the cleaning, put the filters and casing back!
